Windows Live Messenger Missing Contact List Solution – How to Restore Hidden Contacts


About Missing Contact List in Windows Live Messenger
This problem occurs when the Messenger contact store is corrupted.
One of the solution is to delete the Messenger contact store.
Below are solutions for Windows XP and Windows Vista.
You will need to reveal the hidden files and folders else you will not be able to view and delete the file.

Windows Live Messenger Contact List Note
This procedure deletes all the contacts on the local computer.
The contacts will then be downloaded from the server the next time that you sign in to Messenger.

Reveal Hidden Files and Folders for Windows XP and Windows Vista
1. Show (unhide) hidden files and folders:
2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
3. In the new window, click the Organize drop-down list, select the Folder and Search options check box.
4. In the Folder options window, click the View tab.
5. Make sure that the Show hidden files and folders check box is selected.
6. Click Ok, and then close the window.

Deleting Contact Store under Windows Vista
1. Click Start, and then click Computer.
2. Locate the following folder: C:\Users\Windows_log-on_name\Contacts\…
3. Delete all the files that are in this folder.
4. Locate and open the following folder:
C:\Users\Windows_log-on_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts
5. Delete all the folders that are in this folder, including the hidden folders.
6. Close the window, and then try signing in to Windows Live Messenger.

Deleting Contact Store under Windows XP
1. Show (unhide) hidden files and folders:
2. Click Start, and then point to My Computer.
3. In the My Computer window, click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
4. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab.
5. Make sure that the Show hidden files and folders check box is selected.
6. Click Ok, and then close the window.
7. Delete the contact store:
8. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
9. Locate the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_log-on_name\Contacts\Me…
10. Delete all the files that are in this folder.
11. Locate the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_log-on_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts
Delete all the folders, including the hidden folders, that are in this folder.
Close the window, and then try signing in to Windows Live Messenger.

Requesting Technical Support for Windows Live Messenger!
If the previous steps do not resolve or apply to this problem, you will have to contact the Messenger technical support team for more help. The support team will ask you to provide some additional information. You can find this information in the Messenger connectivity log.

To collect and submit this information, follow these steps:
1. To exit Messenger, right-click the Messenger icon in the notification area on the right side of the task bar, 2. Click Exit
3. Delete the old Messenger connection log file:

Collecting information under Windows Vista:
Click Start, type %userprofile% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to open Windows Explorer.
In Windows Explorer, double-click My Documents, and then double-click My Received Files.
In the My Received Files folder, select the MsnMsgr.txt file, and then press DELETE on your keyboard. If connection logging in Messenger is not already enabled, you will not see the MsnMsgr.txt file.

Collecting information under Windows XP:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER to open Windows Explorer:
%userprofile%
In Windows Explorer, double-click My Documents, and then double-click My Received Files.
In the My Received Files folder, select the MsnMsgr.txt file, and then press DELETE on your keyboard. If connection logging in Messenger is not already enabled, you will not see the MsnMsgr.txt file.

►Turn on Messenger connection logging:
Start Messenger but do not sign in.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the left navigation bar, click Connection.
Click Advanced Settings.
►Under Connection Logging, click to select the Save a log of my server connections to help troubleshoot connection problems check box.
Click OK.
►Sign in to Messenger again. The new connectivity log file, MSNMsgr.txt, will be created in the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_log-on_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\MsnMsgr.txt
Windows Vista:
C:\Users\Windows log-on name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\M…

    all contact disappeared
    this happened after i formated the C drive and installed Windows XP again

    i tried EVERYTHING and im getting mad, when i sign in from another pc all contacts are there but not on my PC … :(
    and i dont wanna go back to Messenger 8 … i saved them all from another pc and imported them here they appear in the Privacy place but i re-sign in … they disappear from there again
    this sucks

    i have downloaded the new windows live messenger and i cannot find my contacts to enter on it the messenger is empty no contacts on it i tried to add a contact but nothing shows i am not very happy with the new one i like the old one it is the best i am not happy i have had nothing but trouble with the new one
